Lucy Gayheart is eighteen years old, a tempermental young lady, rife with charm and vitality, and a good pianist. She wanted to escape life in the little town of Haverford and went to Chicago to study music. But she was not born to be an artist, as she lacks will and discipline. This bitter awareness is like a shot, when she hears the opera singer Sebastian singing for the first time. It is an encounter that will change her future life in a fateful way.

Lucy Gayheart Willa Cather Books

This book was the #1 all time favorite book of actress Joanne Woodward (there's a NYTimes article written in 1998 that tells the story of her love for this book). She actually booked herself into Symphony Space in NYC for two nights in a row and simply read the book aloud -- and sold out both nights. It was her dream to turn it into a film, but now she is too old to tackle such a project. She made so many wonderful films during her career; I highly recommend this book so you can see why Joanne Woodward became so passionate about it. It's an excellent candidate for a Book Club read, too -- it's more a novella than a novel -- someday I hope some filmmaker WILL make this into a film.

Lucy Gayheart Willa Cather Books Reviews

I couldn't out it down. A sad story of youth and love and loss. Lucy Gayheart is a timeless story.
I've loved this novel for many years, but had lost track of my copy. I ordered it and re-read it. It is still lovely, and still breaks my heart. This novel about a young girl who moves to Chicago to reach her artistic goals -- but suffers an unexpected fate -- is very short, but it is the best Cather novel, in my opinion.
Took over 3 weeks to arrive from OH to TX. I just started the book and it's as good as Cather's other writing. She's never a disappointment!
Lucy Gayheart is a quintessentially innocent teenager who is beautiful, happy, inquisitive, and self-assured. From the small town of Haverford, i.e., Red Cloud, (Webster County)Nebraska, she travels to Chicago to study piano. Willa Cather portrays Lucy as an idealistic, lovely, talented, and charming daughter and friend who becomes confused by the extreme changes in her environment and cultural mores of a large metropolis as opposed to the simplicity of life in a rural Nebraska town in 1935. She is confronted by choices that will determine a future of introspection and sadness. I plan to discuss and review this book for my PEO chapter, and I intend to compare "Lucy Gayheart" to "My Antonia" and "One of Ours". Willa Cather is a master at searching the souls and deep aspirations of her characters. I recommend "Lucy Gayheart" for women and men of all ages who are inspired by Cather's beautiful landscapes and deep character studies. The Vintage Classic edition is an attractive high quality paperback that I purchased at .
ICan't Get Enough of Willa Cather. The young Lucy Gayheart tells such a beautiful story of a young girl growing up with goals and dreams and nearly achiving them. I had high hopes for her. But what a surprise ending to the book. I have just started reading Willa Cather novels in the last month. Each one gets better than the last if I can say so myself. Beautiful writing and expression. As with the last book I read "Death Comes for the Archbishop" it can't be topped. Can't wait for "O Pioneer".
Wonderful book, just very sad. Left me slightly heart-broken. Not exactly the most uplifting book you can read. At the same time, it’s masterfully written, and definitely deserves a place on your shelf.
The book takes readers to one of Ms. Cather's favorite places in the world, Nebraska's Platte River Valley, time 1901. The story tells of two young people, Lucy Gayheart and Harry Gordon, who expect their lives to be different, then life changes for both. Lucy is eighteen, Harry eight years older, handsome, wealthy, and in love with Lucy. He wants to marry her. Lucy is a beautiful girl, filled with joy, love of life, from a poor family. The Gayhearts, Lucy, father, not ambitious, too easy going, and Pauline, the spinster sister, twelve years older than Lucy who keeps house for the family. The house is located at the edge of town.

Lucy is musically gifted, her father realizes this and sends her to a music teacher in Chicago to become more proficient in piano. Her father, also loves music, and leads the band in the small town. Music is very important in this book. Lucy falls in love with the big midwestern city, so full of life, so much to do, to see, so many places to go. But she must live frugally, her family is hard put to send her here, she feels lucky to be able to come. She is growing away from small town life. She also gives piano lessons to students to add to her income.

Professor Auerbach introduces Lucy to Clement Sebastian, a singer with a beautiful voice, who is in need of an accompanist. James Mockford, his piano player, is not well and needs to rest. Mockford is a strange men, he looks young, then older, a theatrical looking person. Lucy takes an instant dislike to him and believes the feeling is mutual.

Clement Sebastian and Lucy Gayheart become attracted to eath other. The young girl from small town midwest and the sophisticated older man, Lucy is attracted to his talent, his world wise sophistication, his travels and knowledge of great cities, countries and artistic type people. Sebastian lives in Paris, he and his wife are at odds, several friends of his youth are dead. Clement is attracted to Lucy's youth, beauty, and potential. He is 50, feels old and burned out.

The book is divided into three parts, youth, life in Chicago, is part one, Part 2, Lucy is back living in Haverford. Part 3 is the end. Professor Auerbach likes Harry and feels he's a good catch, marry him. Life as a piano accompanist isn't that secure, especially for a woman. There is nothing wrong with marriage and small town life. Lucy gets angry with Auerbach and refuses to have anything to do with him.

Harry has married a woman he doesn't love, just to spite Lucy and himself. He will hardly speak to Lucy though she would like to go back to being friends. She is very depressed and talks to good friend, Mrs Ramsey, who tells her she is too young to give up on life. Lucy decides to grab hold of life, get back into her music, move back to Chicago, start teaching piano again. She makes arrangements.

The book is complicated and goes deep into the lives of these characters. But Willa Cather always tells a good story.
