Growing Up Movies is like meeting an old friend, one you haven't seen in a long time, yet the conversation comes naturally as if no time has passed. The movie essays brought back so many fond memories and laughs for me. I liked how the author shared family stories and especially enjoyed the comments his mom would make about certain movies. Moms always seem to supervise what we watch a bit more than dads! I recently saw it is available in paperback and think it will make a great coffee table book. I really enjoy reading this. Makes me very nostalgic.
A must read for movie aficionados and those nostalgic for movies they grew up with. Clintington's style of writing is fresh and unique and his remembrances uplifting and made me so totally jealous. Do read the Introduction as it gives some great background leading into the movie stories. Highly recommend this book!
Really liked this book. For some reason I kept reading cause I wanted to see if his thoughts were like mine for each movie.
Growing Up Movies is a very appropriate title, as author Clint Harrington's enjoyable book is as much or more about his childhood experiences watching the movies, as it is about the movies themselves. Because of this, it is helpful, though not necessary, if you have seen the movies, to enjoy the book.
Harrington's book is distinguished by the following features 1) nostalgia, 2) enthusiasm, 3) uniqueness, 4) sense of humor, and a 5) down-to-earth style. His nostalgia (you should know he focuses on movies from the 80's), is not just for the movies themselves, but for things that have all but disappeared, such as VCR's and drive'ins (does anybody remember, gasp, double features?).
Harrington displays his enthusiasm through both the evident zeal of his descriptions (for example he talks about having seen a particular movie- one of my my favs- 36 times and being able to quote that movie from beginning to end) and in his candid recollection of the emotions evoked by the movies (from laughter to tears).
The book is unique in the way it captures the complete movie experience and provides a snapshot of Clint's family life. In fact, Harrington's recollections (both humorous and touching) of watching the movies with various family members is a big part of that total movie experience. I know of no other book that does this.
Harrington displays his sense of humor, not only in his recounting humorous lines (yes I too still laugh when remembering "he slimed me," and "when someone asks if you're a god, you say YES," from "Ghostbusters"), but in the conspiratorial way he recounts stealthily watching his first scary movie with his sister.
And yes, Harrington uses down-to-earth language and style which is refreshing (don't expect some Siskel and Ebert or Leonard Maltin review). While Harrington shows an abundant knowledge of movies, throughout the book, it is not in the pedantic manner used by movie critics.
I gave the book 5 stars, primarily, I feel, because of its relatability. Like Mr. Harrington, I too "grew up movies," as my parents, particularly my mom (I have fond recollections also of two movies my Dad took me to), instilled in me my love and appreciation for movies. The book is also relatable because of Harrington's obvious sense of humor and enthusiasm for movies (likely why we follow each other on Twitter).
